The Circumferential Piston Pump consists of two positive displacement rotors designed for transporting very low viscosity products at a range of discharge pressures in food, dairy, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications.

Standard design

Twin-wing Hi-Life piston rotors made of special non-galling alloy are standard in DuraCirc. All other media-contacting steel components, like the rotor case, front cover, and rotor nuts, are in AISI 316L. The DuraCirc pump comes standard with an all stainless steel exterior for high corrosion resistance.

The gearbox comes standard with duplex shafts and a strong, long-life bearing arrangement for efficiency at high volumes.

DuraCirc meets stringent hygienic design standards for effective CIP cleanability.

How the DuraCirc Works

Circumferential Piston pumps transfer fluid by capturing and moving specific volumes from the pump inlet to the pump outlet using rotational mechanical force. Rotor pistons are driven independently on rotating shafts. The rotors are timed to create a low-pressure cavity at the inlet side that helps introduce fluid into the pump. The fluid is transported around the channel by the rotor pistons and is displaced as the rotor pistons re-mesh, generating pressure at the discharge port. The direction of flow is reversible.

Unlike kinetic pumps that accelerate fluid to generate flow and pressure, CPPs transfer product by physically forcing fluid through the pump outlet.

The rotors in a CPP rotate in a close-fitting housing without ever contacting each other. Large cavities between the rotors and the non-contacting design means gentle handling of thin and viscous fluids and fluids containing large solids.

To make the DuraCirc adaptable to application space requirements, it’s available in vertical and horizontal orientations and an optional rectangular inlet option for high-viscosity fluids.

Pump sizing

Correctly sizing a circumferential piston pump depends on several application-specific factors. Pump representatives need the following information to select the right pump for the application.

Product/Fluid Data

1. Fluid to be pumped: Some liquids change viscosity when under pressure, such as when they come in contact with a rotor inside a pump. Some liquids become less viscous with increased force, while others become more viscous.

2. Fluid viscosity: Positive displacement pumps deliver a constant flow of fluid at a given pump speed. However, when viscosity increases, resistance to flow increases, so to maintain system flow at higher viscosities, pumps may require more horsepower.

3. Pumping temperature: minimum, normal, and maximum. Temperature-sensitive fluids change their flow properties when temperature changes, so knowing processing temperatures helps with pump selection. Temperature can affect product viscosity.

4. Cleaning in Place temperature(s): minimum, normal, and maximum.

Performance Data

1. Flow rate: minimum, normal, and maximum. The pump you choose determines the flow rates you can achieve under system operating conditions. Flow rate is the volume of fluid moved by the pump in a given time frame, as measured, for example, in gallons per minute or liters per second.

For example, a pump that moves 32 gallons of fluid every minute has a flow rate of 32 GPM.

2. Discharge head/pressure (closest to pump outlet): Once the fluid is in the pump, the pump’s mechanical action creates pressure to move fluids through the outlet side of the pump where the fluid now must overcome pressure created by gravity and system components on that side of the system. The difference between inlet and outlet pressure is the pressure differential.

3. Suction condition at pump inlet: All pumps have minimum pressure requirements at their inlets to work properly. The technical phrase for the minimum requirement is Net Positive Suction Head required (NPSHr). The Net Positive Suction Head available (NSPHa) at the pump inlet must always be greater than the Net Positive Suction Head required (NPSHr) to avoid cavitation, or the formation of vapor filled bubbles that can rapidly expand and collapse causing damage to the pump and process piping.

Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHa) is determined by the process piping. You always want NPSHa to be greater than NPSHr. The lower the speed of a PD pump, the lower the NPSHr.

1. Lower cavitation risk

The DuraCirc Port and pump-head geometry achieves a very low NPSHr, to reduce cavitation risk.

2. Bearings

Long-life, heavy-duty bearings in a solid stainless steel gearcase reduce shaft movement and allow close pump-head clearances to minimize pump-head contact. A modular seal design makes seal conversion easy without requiring re-machining or additional flush housings. Single oil lubrication system significantly increases time between oil changes and elimination of weekly regreasing of individual bearings.

Servicing DuraCirc

Servicing is more straightforward in 6 key ways:

  1. You can replace the front-loading single seal quickly without removing the pump from the processing line.
  2. A single gearbox lubricant with extended service life maintains continuous operation.
  3. Refitting rotors is easy because the splines ensure correct placement.
  4. Long-life bearings decrease maintenance frequency
  5. Factory set timing and shimming make gearbox rebuilds unnecessary when changing key components

Condition monitoring

Condition monitoring (CM) tracks the operating condition of rotating equipment in the pump. A sensor in the monitor measures vibration and alerts operators through a visible LED indicator on the monitor and on any connected mobile device within range if preset thresholds are exceeded.

The CM collects and analyzes data from rotors, recording deviations from benchmark performance. With the data, an operator can make fast, accurate decisions and schedule maintenance accordingly, preventing potential problems before they occur.

DuraCirc Aseptic is designed for high volumetric efficiency and ease of service in aseptic processing in the dairy, food, and beverage industries, especially for packaging requiring extended shelf life. Aseptic models reach flow rates up to 103 m3/h (453 gpm) and pressures up to 25 bar (363 psi).
